CHASE DID LET SHANE sleep in the next morning. He reveled in having some quiet time alone, which was well worth it even though he had to struggle to shave and brush his teeth and find the clothes he wanted and get himself dressed.
It was great. It was the first time heâd been on his own since he got home from the hospital. Yet it was kind of lonesome, too. Weird without the kid there, staying on Chaseâs case every minute.
He grinned to himself. Who wouldâve ever guessed that Shane could turn into a dedicated nurse? Heâd certainly been unselfish through all this. He had to hand it to the kid.
And Shane was still clean and sober, too. Of course, how could he not beâstuck way out here in the middle of nowhere?
Chase hobbled to the closet to look for the other pair of jeans that had already been split up one leg to make room for his cast. No matter how much money he made, he couldnât stand waste. Heâd picked out only two old pairs for that treatment, even though Shane had assured him that they could do a whole bunch and they wouldnât be wasted because when summer came, heâd turn them into cutoffs for Chase. Not only was Shane his nurse, he was his tailor, too.
He grinned at that thought while he leaned on the crutches and tried to find the jeans, which should be easy because they were probably the only pair not starched. He and Shane had been doing their own laundry and they werenât up to the starching and ironing stage of that chore.
He could wear the sweats heâd put on after the snowball fight last night. Thatâd be lots easier and more sensible because he was beginning to work up a light sweat here. Any little exertion nearly did him in. He had to push himself more. Had to get past that.
You just donât want to go to the barn in sweats with Elle here.
Well, he hated to admit it, but that was probably the reason he was tottering back and forth on one foot and two sore armpits here in this insane closet that seemed about the same size as the house he and his dad used to live in. He kept his best saddles and some other gear in here, too, and heâd probably keep on doing it even after the tack room was all finished out in the barn.
Gear he might never have a use for again.
He slapped his mind away from that thought and got it back onto the clothes. He really did feel like a sloppy, lazy bum wearing sweats around the place all day. Thank God, he found the jeans.
It took him a long time but he got into them and a boot on his uncasted foot, then a decent-looking heavy shirt. He tucked it in as best he could with one arm and hobbled back into the bathroom to comb his hair. Again.
Arenât you overdoing it a little, Lomax? What was that you were saying about wanting to get rid of her?
He was.
